September 01, 2017 - September 10, 2017 |
Description: | From Annual Fiesta de Santa Fe Website: Every September, Santa Fe holds a weekend of ceremony and celebration commemorating the peaceful reconquest of the capital by General Don Diego de Vargas in 1692. Watch as the historic event is re-enacted, and enjoy the arts and crafts booths, entertainment and food booths that line the historic Santa Fe plaza during the Fiesta weekend.
In 1712, it was brought into law that the City of Santa Fe honor in perpetuity the peaceful reconquest of the capital by General Don Diego de Vargas in 1692. In 1692, General Don Diego de Vargas made a promise to the Marian statue of Nuestra Senora de la Paz, La Conquistadora, to honor the memory of the peaceful resettlement of the city of Santa Fe. The revered religious statue remains a significant part of the ceremony surrounding the Fiestas.
Every year, a re-enactment of De Vargas' resettlement of the city takes place on the Plaza. Other celebrations include religious ceremony, art market, food fair, and competitions for this year's La Reina and Don De Vargas, that encompass the honoring of this 300+ year-old tradition.
